BCSF’s project ‘A participatory conservation programme for the Comoro Islands’ is working to conserve remaining forest habitats and terrestrial biodiversity on the island of Anjouan. The project focuses on helping the rural population to improve the sustainability of their land management and use of natural resources. The project uses an innovative participatory approach which encourages rural Comorians to analyse the agricultural and environmental problems they face in order to find and implement appropriate solutions.
Within the Comoros the project is known as Engagement Communautaire pour le Développement Durable (ECDD). Komori ya leo na meso is the project’s Comorian slogan which translates as ‘The Comoros of today and tomorrow’.

In the Comoros the project works closely with the Comorian Government, the Administration of the Island of Anjouan, the University of the Comoros, the National Centre for Scientific Research, and local NGOs. Internationally, the project works in partnership with Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, and with consultants from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the Department for International Development at the University of East Anglia, and Cranfield University.
External funding for the project is provided by the French Development Agency (€750,000 over three years), the UK Government’s Darwin Initiative (£241,000 over three years), the Global Environment Facility, BirdLife International, and Airbus-UK.
